About Us

Celeste Shankland is the founder and principal lawyer of Landed Law.

Celeste is a lawyer with experience in a wide range of refugee and immigration legal issues, who assists clients in all aspects of their journey to landing in Canada and with issues relating to their status. She regularly represents clients before all levels of the Immigration and Refugee Board and at the Federal Court of Canada. She also assists individuals and families with applications to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), including sponsorships, humanitarian and compassionate applications, pre-removal risk assessments, and more. Celeste speaks French, and works closely with law clerks, interpreters, and translators from around the world to provide services in many languages.

Celeste has a long-standing dedication to the rights and interests of refugees and migrants. Prior to entering the practice of refugee and immigration law in 2013, Celeste was a supervising lawyer at Project Genesis, a high volume walk-in legal clinic in Montreal, Quebec where she provided services in the areas of tenancy and poverty law to many newcomers to Canada. Celeste has also worked at the Refugee Rights Clinic in Cape Town, South Africa and as a Legal Advisor at the National Centre Against Violence in Ulaabaatar, Mongolia. In Canada, Celeste has been involved with the work of a number of non-profit organizations, including Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), the HIV Legal Network, the Access Centres for Students with Disabilities at Concordia and McGill Universities, and several legal clinics in Montreal. Celeste also founded and ran a charity Ping Pong tournament for 5 years benefitting local non-profit organizations. Celeste co-founded and co-chaired “Place at the Table”, a group of concerned Torontonians who have privately sponsored two large refugee families from Syria.

Celeste holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from Concordia University in Montreal; bachelor’s degrees in civil law (BCL) and in common law (LLB) from McGill University, where she graduated with the highest standing in Human Rights Law throughout the program; and a post-graduate certificate in Refugee and Forced Migration Issues from York University in Toronto.
